Representative Alex Mooney of West Virginia has established himself as a fervent supporter of Israel, driven by the $180,583 he has received from AIPAC. Abrasive Alex’s allegiance to Israel is evident in his support for pro-Israel legislation, which has dire consequences for Palestinians. In voting for the Israel Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, which provided Israel with $14.3 billion, Mooney stated, "I proudly voted for H.R. 6126 to stand with Israel as they defend themselves against the barbaric Hamas terrorist attack." However, this "defense" has resulted in the deaths of nearly 40,000 civilians in Gaza as of August 2024, including 16,500 children, with the destruction of vital infrastructure and homes, exacerbating a humanitarian crisis that has displaced thousands.
Mooney’s legislative record further reveals his deep alignment with Israel’s agenda, at the expense of Palestinian rights. He co-sponsored H.R. 6940, the Israel Anti-Boycott Act, which seeks to criminalize participation in the BDS movement—a global campaign to impose economic boycotts on Israel in protest of its treatment of Palestinians—by imposing fines or imprisonment. He also backed H.R. 2409, the U.S.-Israel Cooperation Expansion Act, which strengthened military ties between Israel and the United States, facilitating the exchange of crowd suppression tactics between Israeli military forces and U.S. police. These actions underscore Mooney’s role in suppressing Palestinian advocacy while empowering Israel’s military operations.
Abrasive Alex’s rhetoric further inflames the situation, as seen in his vote to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib for her use of the Palestinian liberation chant “from the river to the sea,” which he falsely equated with calls for genocide, stating, "It is despicable that a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives would join Hamas terrorists in chanting ‘from the river to the sea,’ which stands for eliminating Israel from the map along with 8 million Jews." By conflating a call for Palestinian freedom with anti-Semitism, Mooney not only misrepresents the chant's meaning but also silences legitimate criticism of Israel's actions, all while securing AIPAC’s continued financial support for his political career.
