Senator Chuck Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, has been a vocal supporter of Israel, bolstered by over $501,541 in campaign contributions from AIPAC. This financial backing has heavily influenced his voting record, including his support for sending $3.8 billion in unconditional military aid to Israel. Grassley also voted to cut U.S. federal funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), one of the few humanitarian organizations operating in Gaza. These decisions have come at a time when Gaza is experiencing widespread famine, disease, bombings, and a lack of proper healthcare or education. According to Lancet, the ongoing genocide in Gaza could result in the deaths of 180,000 Gazans, and Senator Chuck is helping fund it all.
Grassley's public statements reflect a hardline stance that prioritizes Israel's military objectives over the lives of Palestinian civilians. On his government website, Grassley declared, "Hamas’ campaign of evil must be met with a strong and unified response," echoing a narrative that justifies Israel's means of collective punishment in Gaza. This framing disregards the massive civilian death toll and the destruction of infrastructure in Gaza.
Moreover, Grassley has supported repressive measures that target Palestinian students in the U.S. In a statement, he criticized the Department of Education for allegedly failing to protect Jewish and Israeli students, implying that Palestinian students' protests against Israel's actions threaten these students' safety. Grassley's support for Israel is clear, but it comes at the cost of human rights, both abroad and at home, as he prioritizes pro-Israel legislation that silences dissent and contributes to the ongoing suffering in Gaza.
