Representative Jared Golden of Maine has been a steadfast supporter of Israel, a stance that aligns closely with the $540,503 he has received from AIPAC. This significant sum has clearly influenced his voting record, including his opposition to both the ceasefire resolution and the McCollum Palestinian Rights Resolution. Golden has consistently voted in favor of pro-Israel measures, including sending $41 billion in unconditional military aid to Israel while it continues its genocidal campaign against Gaza. According to the Lancet, it is estimated that 180,000 Gazans will die as a result of this ongoing genocide. Golden’s financial ties to AIPAC reveal a troubling connection between his political actions at the expense of Palestinian lives.
Golden’s unwavering support for Israel extends to his public statements, including his praise of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu after the war criminal addressed Congress. Golden stated, “I appreciated Netanyahu’s recognition of the Trump administration’s work to pass the Abraham Accords and of the Biden administration’s strong support for Israel after the deadliest attack against Jews since the Holocaust.” This statement whitewashes the brutal Israeli military campaign in Gaza, which has targeted civilian infrastructure, hospitals, and homes. Golden’s subsequent remark, “I pray for their return and the return of all the hostages, and for Hamas to lay down its arms so this deadly conflict can end,” ignores the fact that Israel has rejected ceasefire deals and bears all the responsibility for the ongoing devastation in Gaza.
In May 2024, Golden criticized President Biden for withholding military assistance to Israel, insisting, “I think war is terrible... but I do not believe it is factually accurate to say that war crimes are being committed in Palestine at this time.” This dismissal of the widespread destruction, mass displacement, and death in Gaza—perpetrated by the Israeli military and paid for by U.S. tax dollars—demonstrates his callous disregard for the Palestinian lives lost. Golden’s votes to cut U.S. federal funding for UNRWA, the organization responsible for providing vital food, water, and medicine to Gazans, further illustrate his indifference to the suffering of the Palestinian people. His actions, backed by AIPAC funds, align him with a campaign of violence and destruction against the besieged people of Gaza.
