In his April 20, 2024 statement, Northern California congressperson Jared Huffman declared staunch “support [for] continued funding for Israel’s security needs,” while arguing that “Israel’s war against Hamas is justified.” We would like to point out Huffman’s complete blindness to the fact that the horrific death toll in Gaza, Israel’s mass starvation campaign, and escalating bombings clearly showcase this is not just a “war against Hamas,” but a war against the entire population of Palestinians living under brutal occupation. One of the only redeeming statements he's ever made has been to acknowledge that "UNWRA is by far the most capable humanitarian group in Gaza." Huffman thinks he can advocate for Palestinians in Gaza while supporting Israel at the same time. What he fails to recognize is that Israel is actively trying to exterminate all Palestinians — you cannot support the genocider and the population being exterminated at the same time. It is centrist stances like Huffman's that normalize Israel's genocide campaign in Gaza and allow the occupation to persist. Protestors shared this exact sentiment outside Huffman's campaign fundraiser in May 2024, but they were barred from entering and bringing their message to the California representative.
