Democrat Senator Peter Welch of Vermont presents himself as one of the more restrained voices in Congress when it comes to U.S. military aid to Israel. While it is true that Welch voted against sending billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars to fund Israel’s military as they carry out a genocidal campaign in Gaza, his record is far from spotless. Despite his opposition to large military aid packages, Welch’s support for Israel remains evident in his backing of a two-state solution, a vision that effectively forces Palestinians to live alongside their colonizers under a system of brutal apartheid. More troubling, however, is his vote to cut funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the very organization responsible for delivering life-saving humanitarian aid to the besieged people of Gaza.
Welch’s rhetoric on supporting Palestinian rights rings hollow when contrasted with his actions. His statement in March 2023—"Despite increasing obstacles, the two-state solution must be reinvigorated"—fails to acknowledge the everyday oppression Palestinians face under Israel’s apartheid regime and checkpoints. Furthermore, while Welch spoke out against sending offensive military aid to Israel, noting in May 2024, "This country will continue to support Israel and its national defense. But that shouldn't include sending 2,000 lbs. bombs to be dropped on the most densely populated area in the world," his record suggests that his criticisms are inconsistent at best. The contradictions in his voting record and public statements reflect a broader failure to fully break with a pro-Israel agenda, one that has dire consequences for the Palestinian people.
